GSPS

Inmarsat’s Global Satellite Phone Service GSPS is an L-band geostationary satellite-based voice network.

About

Inmarsat’s Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS) is an established and proven global voice and text satellite communication service, with over 140,000 subscribers worldwide. GSPS mobile and fixed voice services utilise the world’s most advanced satellite communications network, offering clear voice quality and minimal call drop out. GSPS handheld, mobile and fixed services can be used on land and at sea.

Inmarsat’s GSPS Core Module 2.0 provides access to a global voice, text and data service for any Inmarsat platform. The low-cost, credit card-sized module is easy to integrate, enabling partners to develop products and services for the important global mobile satellite voice and messaging market.

Network

Combined I-4 Satellites and Alphasat Coverage

GSPS services are offered globally down to a minimum of 5 degrees elevation to the satellite. Towards the edge of coverage, greater user cooperation is required. Users are advised to follow the user interface instructions in those particular areas.

On the Alphasat footprint GSPS coverage has been prioritised in the region north of 44 degrees south. GSPS users may experience a degradation of performance south of this latitude.

Hardware

GSPS requires products with tested core technology to work with the network. Inmarsat provides GSPS core modules to support development.

Various devices using these core modules are available to access GSPS services:

  • IsatPhone for land and maritime services
  • FleetPhone for maritime services
  • IsatPhone Link for land services

Satellite terminals support voice, Short Message Service (SMS) and supplementary services. Data is available on selected models.

Services Supported

GSPS offers global voice and SMS – including text-to-email and email-to-text capability – and low data rate circuit- switched data calling. Supplementary services such as call diversion and voicemail are also available.
